Different Types of Architectural Woodworking

Architectural woodwork is essentially any product made out of wood.

Residential woodworking can be done on:

  • Kitchen Cabinets
  • Mantels
  • Moldings
  • Staircases
  • Doors
  • Bedrooms
  • Great Rooms
  • Libraries
  • House Exteriors
  • Floors

After the room/area is chosen next to be decided is between surface coatings or penetrating finishes. The decision is based on:

  • durability required
  • clarity desired
  • drying time
  • historical correctness
  • age of the piece
  • decorating scheme
  • cost and budget

There are 3 different types of surface coatings in varnish, shellac, and lacquer. Depending on the level required or desired above one would be chosen to complete the woodworking process.
